Success Story: Garrett Square
The closing of the TOPS store at Lakeview and Superior in 2006 left the Glenville neighborhood in a food desert —without access to fresh groceries in the area—and with an empty 65,000 square foot building in the center of their neighborhood. Through the efforts of the City of Cleveland and CenterMark Development, the corner of Lakeview and Superior is a thriving retail center again, with a Save-A-Lot providing fresh groceries to the neighborhood and Ohio’s first Forman Mills, a national clothing retailer.
CenterMark Development signed a Community Benefits agreement and surpassed the hiring number for local residents during construction. A year after opening, an Advance Auto Parts store was added on an outlot. The project is providing employment opportunities for neighborhood residents as well. In total, the stores combine to employ over 70 Cleveland residents, many of whom are residents of the neighborhood and walk to work.
The City is also working on an adjacent site that was a former dry cleaner that is now a vacant brownfield. CenterMark is hoping to bring a sit-down restaurant to this location. Development is occurring up and down Superior Avenue with Hot Sauce Williams, a Taste of Memphis, and several other developments planned for the area. The NEON Health Clinic also worked with Economic Development for new sign as the neighborhood revitalization continues to grow in this Glenville neighborhood.
