Paints and Coatings
According to the
Encyclopedia of Cleveland History, Cleveland has had a presence in the paints and coatings history dating back to the 19th century. “The Glidden Coatings & Resins Div. (Imperial Chemical Industries), revolutionized the coatings world with chemical research that had applications in food technology as well as paint.” Today, Cleveland’s paints and coatings industry is still providing a variety of services in this industry from: small business paints and coatings, headquarters or regionally based offices, niche suppliers, and many more. However maybe the most recognized, since being founded in Cleveland in 1866, Sherwin-Williams has grown to become one of the largest producers of paints and coatings in the United States and distributes around the world. An
investor financial report by Sherwin-Williams states 2013 net sales of $10.19 billion, which is a 6.93% increase from last year. Wow!
In the paints and coatings industry, Ohio is one of the top ten states supporting the largest payroll while Cleveland is the ninth largest industrial market in the nation for Paints and Coatings. A large amount of growth is expected in the Northeast Ohio Region in particular as the U.S demand for paints and coatings is expected to rise and reach $1.5 billion gallons in 2017.

The Paints and Coatings industry separates into manufacturing of paints and adhesives. Both of these sub-industries are expected to grow. Specifically, revenue for paints is projected to rise 2.1% annually and adhesive manufacturing revenue is expected to rise 2.4% annually. There is a domestic and international drive in demand for automobile and aircraft manufacturing which will result in increased profit margins for the Paints and Coatings industry in the coming years.
