City of Cleveland Sponsors Weapons of Mass Creation Fest

The Department of Economic Development was a proud sponsor of Go Media’s 6th Annual Weapons of Mass Creation event at the Allen Theatre this past August 7th through 9th.

“WMC is the premier design and entrepreneurship conference in the Midwest. Each year, working class creatives get together to talk shop, share their stories, and get inspired” – Go Media.

Marketing the City of Cleveland as a great place to live, work, and play is one of the missions of the Department of Economic Development, yet the team faced a challenge in how to attract makers and creators to start a conversation with a city department. The Department of Economic Development worked tirelessly to develop the Department’s most outstanding display thus far! With a tremendous amount of help from Cleveland’s own, Recess Creative (tagline and table banner) and Jakprints (T-shirts), the Department was able to successfully market Cleveland as a creative place.

“Make it in Cleveland” was a hit throughout the Fest. Visitors from around the country, as well as Go Media staff were excited to learn about Cleveland’s Maker Movement (#CLEmakermovement) though our variety of resources including a Maker’s Resource List, postcards highlighting a few maker-businesses in Cleveland, Financial Assistance programs, and several guides: Collective Arts Network (CAN) Cleveland journal, LIVE!Cleveland magazine, Destination Cleveland, and Edible Cleveland magazine.

The event kicked off with a VIP Networking event and Ink Wars (photo)—a competition featuring eight artists, eight blank canvases, markers, a theme, and 60 minutes to create.

WMC Fest 6 was a successful creative conference that attracted hundreds of artists, designers, and other makers to participate in workshops and interact with guest speakers from near and far. The Department of Economic Development thanks Go Media for the opportunity to participate and be a part of the Maker Movement. #makeitinCLE
