Iconic Downtown Restaurant Re-Opens at New Location on East Ninth Street

Sweetwater’s Café Sausalito, which closed its doors late January 2018, has re-opened in a grand new and vibrant 5,761 square foot space in the IMG Building with a new name, new menu and new look.

“Sausalito on Ninth,” in its new contemporary, street-level location at 1360 East Ninth Street downtown near St. Clair Avenue in the IMG building, serves locally sourced food, beer, wine and hand-crafted cocktails.

The new casual dining spot has loft seating, a contemporary bar and floor-to-ceiling glass-front windows that look out onto East Ninth Street. Seasonable patio seating is available along East Ninth bringing new energy, vibrancy and foot-traffic to a major Cleveland artery.

“We’re ready to go and start this next, exciting phase,’’ said Sausalito owner Saravanan "Babu" Chandrababu. “It’s going to be a great spot for business lunches, Happy Hours and after-work dinners.”

In addition, Chandrababu opened a new private dining venue on the 15th floor of the IMG building called “Penthouse on Ninth.” The space seats up to 100 people and offers sweeping views of the lake, the Rock Hall and other downtown buildings. This will be yet another spot where Chandrababu can showcase his popular Sausalito Catering menu for private parties, special dinners and more.

The roots of the restaurant date back more than 30 years, when it was first established as Sweetwater Cafe on Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland by well-known restaurateur Gary Lucarelli. Sausalito later moved to a vibrant mall at the downtown Galleria with the name Sweetwater’s Café Sausalito. Now, under the new leadership of Indian immigrant Saravanan "Babu" Chandrababu, a re-envisioned restaurant resides in a beautiful, contemporary glass-front location along bustling East 9th Street in downtown Cleveland. With a contemporary feel featuring decor with a nod to Cleveland’s history, Sausalito on Ninth celebrates Cleveland’s strong roots and reflects its vibrant, growing downtown.

The City was proud to assist this immigrant owned small business expand in the City of Cleveland which absorbed 5,761 sf of vacant street level commercial space. Sausalito on Ninth received financial assistance from the Department of Economic Development in the form of a SBA Muni Grant and a Neighborhood Retail Assistance Loan. Total costs for the renovation of the space were $450,000.

The longstanding Cleveland business will retain 11 full time jobs while creating at least four new jobs for the City.

Sausalito Catering has won Best of TheKnot.com 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018 and have been voted into their Hall of Fame.  Sausalito was also awarded Couple's Choice on WeddingWire.com 2016 and 2017.
