Il Rione Pizzeria — New Pizzeria Serving Gordon Square Neighborhood

Il Rione Pizzeria, LLC is a new pizzeria in the Gordon Square Neighborhood which had its grand opening December 12, 2017 to the great anticipation of those in the neighborhood especially those transplants from New York.

Brian Holleran and Brian Moss are the co-founders of the start-up business and co-owners of the building in which the 1,500 square foot retail space is located. They were co-conspirators of entrepreneurship for a long time while working across the street from the boarded up storefront and planning its future. Until the 1950s the building located at 1301 West 65th Street, functioned as an old billiard hall and tavern with one apartment and had been previously vacant for years.

The partners obtained a loan from the City from the Neighborhood Retail Assistance Program to partially assist with the build-out of the vacant space, acquisition of furniture & fixtures, restaurant equipment, signage, and soft costs. The project also included assisting with financing some exterior building improvements to include lighting, painting, driveway and sidewalk repairs. Up to $3,000 of the loan can be forgiven with documentation of green/sustainable and energy efficient initiatives.

So what will keep the customers repeatedly coming back?

"We just want to make really good pizza….We don’t want to just be the best in Cleveland. We want to be the best in the country, including New York and New Jersey. We’re going for the gold.”

The Brians simply focus on the pies— “New York/New Jersey-style 17-inch pizza” with baguette style crusts that the partners perfected at home over the past five years. Their plan is to keep their menu simple with a variety of pizzas and salads accompanied by beer and wine. For now they have dinner only hours except for weekends when they open at 11am.

The Il Rione Pizzeria will create at least four full-time jobs for the City of Cleveland.
