Old Brooklyn Cheese Company Opens its Doors

Old Brooklyn Cheese Company opened its doors just in time to provide Clevelanders with the best artisanal international and regional cheeses for their holiday parties. The new start-up business, owned and operated by Michael Januska, celebrated its grand opening Saturday, December 17, 2016 at 4138 Pearl Road in the Old Brooklyn Neighborhood of Cleveland. The 1,200 square-foot retail space joins the growing Cleveland maker-movement with a commitment to producing and selling quality artisan cheese.

Over 400 people crowded into the newly renovated shop to taste, sample and fill their bags with delicious cheeses. Initial offerings include French, Croatian, Spanish and Italian imports as well as local cheese makers such as Yellow House Cheese, Lake Erie Creamery and Lucky Penny Farm. In the New Year, Old Brooklyn Cheese will offer hand-crafted, 60-day aged gouda and 12-month aged bandage wrapped English cheddar made on site. Check out their Facebook page for store hours.

Michael Januska is marketing the use of his cheese cave to other local Ohio cheesemakers. Partnering with other cheesemakers allows him to offer a curated menu in the tasting room while offering aging cheese on site at its peak, guaranteeing the best flavor and quality.  Other products including crackers, nuts, local honey, jams, olives, etc. are offered as part of the tasting room menu and retail experience.

The City of Cleveland supported this project with a $36,000 Neighborhood Retail Assistance Program Loan. The project will create a minimum of one new job at the retail storefront.
